Ingredients

For the Stir-Fry:
– 14 oz (400g) firm or extra-firm tofu
– 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (canola, sesame, or olive oil)
– 1 bell pepper (red, yellow, or green), sliced
– 1 medium onion, sliced
– 2 cups broccoli florets
– 1 cup snap peas or green beans
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
– 2-3 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

For the Sauce:
– 3 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
– 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional for sweetness)
– 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
– 1 teaspoon sesame oil
– 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
– 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (optional, for thickening)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu
1. Drain and Press Tofu: Remove the tofu from its packaging, drain the liquid, and press it to remove excess moisture. You can do this by wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel and placing a heavy object on top for about 15-20 minutes.
2. Cut Tofu: Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.

Step 2: Marinate the Tofu (Optional)
– In a bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and 1 teaspoon of sesame oil. Toss the tofu cubes gently in the marinade and let them sit for about 10-15 minutes for extra flavor.

Step 3: Cook the Tofu
1. Heat Oil: In a large non-stick skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
2. Fry Tofu: Add the tofu cubes in a single layer and cook until golden brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4: Stir-fry the Vegetables
1. Add More Oil: In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of vegetable oil.
2. Sauté Aromatics: Add minced garlic and ginger, stirring for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
3. Add Vegetables: Add the sliced onion, bell pepper, broccoli, and snap peas. Stir-fry for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are tender-crisp.

Step 5: Combine Tofu and Sauce
1. Return Tofu to Skillet: Add the cooked tofu back into the skillet with the vegetables.
2. Prepare Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes. If using cornstarch, mix it with water in a separate bowl.
3. Add Sauce: Pour the sauce over the tofu and veggies. If you’re using cornstarch, add that as well. Stir everything to combine and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until heated through and the sauce thickens slightly.

Step 6: Serve
– Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions. Serve hot over steamed rice, quinoa, or noodles.

Side Tips and Notes
– Tofu Tips: For extra crispy tofu, you can pan-fry it in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.
– Vegetable Variations: Feel free to use any seasonal vegetables you have on hand, such as carrots, zucchini, or bell peppers.
– Spice Level: Adjust the red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level. You can also add fresh chili peppers for more heat.
– Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or microwave before serving.
– Serving Suggestions: This dish pairs well with steamed rice or noodles, and you can add a sprinkle of sesame seeds for extra flavor and texture.
